When you look at Detroit current roster, 3 names comes up the most often, Gaborik-Eric Staal and Semin. Three young, extremely talented game breaking forward. The future is set for the big offensive first line for years, with some good older depth offensively, Jason Arnott, 33 years old good 2-way centre and the gritty 2-way scoring winger in Erik Cole, 29 years old. Older guys like Straka and Guerin will not be resigned this season. We will keep the veteran Ray Whitney who can still put up points on a secondary scoring role.
Since the departure of Seabrook, the defensive squad of Detroit was left barely empty and not really solid defensively. Thats why I traded the 16th overall pick for Marc Edouard Vlasic, a 21 years old defensive dman with decent upside offensively. Younger dman should replace Brewer, Keith Yandle and Ryan O'Byrne might get their chance next season too and Valentenko and Weber will have another years in the minors.
It was the most important week in Detroit since I took the reign of the Cougars, we add five 1st round pick lets take a look at it.
1st round:
#7: Mikkel Boedker, 6"0 195lbs, a speedy foward with great offensives abilities, hockey sense and balance, he is more of a playmaker than a scorer but his shot is still dangerous and own a quick release with above average accuracy. Projected: 1st line centre
#12: Michael Del Zotto, the 6"0 200lbs defenseman is projected as a QB. Owns excellent skating ability and passing skills, his defensive plays is not excellent and he needs to work on that. Projected: Top-4 Dman
#14: Zach Boychuk, an undersized centre, at 5"9 and 175lbs, Zach is a speedster, amazing vision of the game and a good hockey sense. Got a sweet pair of hands and good accuracy. Projected: Top-6 forward
#16: Pick was traded to Helsinki in return we acquire D Marc Edouard Vlasic
#18: Joshua Bailey, a 6"0 190lbs centre with room to grow, Bailey is a good two way centre, he is more of a playmaker than a scorer, will always be a pass first type of player, he can be effective on a scoring line or in defensive situation. Can be used as a PP quarterback. The knock on him could be his skating. Projected: 2-way centre
2nd round
#21: Mattias Tedenby, a 5"10 176lbs Left Winger, Tedenby is a skilled forward. Time will be the key with Tedenby, who will play atleast another season in Swedish, hoping to get top-6 minutes oversea. One of the faster skater out of the 2008 draft, his acceleration is also considerate like one of the best of his draft, he is doing everything at high speed with amazing balance. He can stickhandles in a phone both and makes nifty dekes even at high speed with a good puck control. Above average vision and hockey sense with some kind of a grit in his game despite his small size. Projected: 1st line forward/2nd line forward
#55: Mitch Wahl, a 6"00 175lbs Centre, from Seal Beach California, Wahl is a good 2-way forward, he will works hard on every shift and at both ends of the ice, he plays with energy and determination. He is more of a playmaker than a goal scorer. I traded up to get him since he fall during the draft, Wahl is a special player for his ability to find the open man and his maturity for his age. His on-ice vision makes his winger better. Projected: 2-way centre
